Aims

  • To enable students to understand how changes in the economy affect the experience of employees within the workplace
  • To introduce students to both psychological and sociological understandings of how the world of work is changing
  • To understand what the contemporary workplace looks like, with a  focus on the work and the workers
  • To explore the theory and research in work-related issues including technological and work force changes; job types; career development; and the changing employee/employer relationship.
  • To enable students to analyse changing trends from a number of levels of analysis- the individual, groups, organisational and societal - in an attempt to increase understanding of the complex processes at work.
  • To help students understand how these issues affect workers from the factory to the office, from manual to professional employees and from the public to the private sector

Syllabus

  • Section 1: The dynamic context of the workplace – industry and ownership, changes in technology, changes in workforce composition

  • Section 2: The nature of work and representation – work organisation, knowledge intensive work, the employment relationship/psychological contract, non-standard employment

  • Section 3: The individual at work – identification, careers, the new professions

  • Section 4: Issues surrounding workplace composition – gender, age, work-life balance, emotional labour.

  • assess difficulties associated with the change in work and how organisations and employees are affected  by and deal with change
  • understand the key issues facing managers at the beginning of a new century
  • demonstrate a higher level understanding of  developments in organisational theory

  • analyse industry reports in a critical and considered manner
  • work effectively individually (essay writing) and in groups (poster presentation)
  • work as part of a project team and communicate effectively within team and to the rest of the class
