Aims

  • To investigate aspects of the support infrastructure for the Knowledge Economy and Enterprise Development in the UK
  • To explore practices in the Knowledge Economy that facilitate growth and development
  • To examine comparatively the role of the Knowledge Economy and Enterprise Development for economic development in the international context
  • To increase student knowledge about applications of necessary skills to meet the needs of the Knowledge Economy
  • To examine  the role of innovation in economic and social development
  • To explore key issues in the Knowledge Economy and Enterprise Development from a theoretical underpinning through to practical applications of Government policy.

Syllabus

This module features current research in the Knowledge Economy and Enterprise.

  • Stakeholders in the Knowledge economy
  • The Triple Helix
  • The role of the Universities including  Science Parks
  • Innovative SMEs and their contribution
  • The Knowledge Worker
  • The Entrepreneur and ‘special knowledge
  • Strategic Support Initiatives
  • Internationalisation, globalisation and growth

Learning Outcomes

Subject Mastery

  • Critically and effectively analyse enterprise support strategies for the Knowledge Economy
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of innovative practices in small, knowledge-based, firms
  • Demonstrate a critical awareness about key issues in the Knowledge Economy and how the infrastructure operates within the UK and elsewhere
  • Awareness of the importance of the Knowledge Economy to Enterprise development at policy and practical levels
  • Demonstrate critical evaluation of research publications in the field. This will involve analysis, synthesis and reflection of various outcomes.
  • Ability to relate theoretical considerations to applied contexts.
