Aims

  • Build on existing knowledge to examine the legal requirements relating to equality of treatment of different groups
  • Constraints on policies to promote diversity
  • Develop managers with a keen awareness of the legal framework when making decisions impacting on equality
  • Equip managers with the skills to formulate and implement strategies and policies to minimise potential legal pitfalls.

Syllabus

Topical issues will be selected each year from this ever-expanding area but will typically include some of the following:

  • The concept of direct discrimination on grounds of sex or race
  • Harassment at work
  • Equal pay for men and women
  • Treatment of pregnancy and other family related rights
  • Disability discrimination – the requirement to make reasonable adjustments
  • Gender re-assignment and sexual orientation discrimination
  • Discrimination based on religion or belief
  • Age discrimination
  • Discrimination outwith employment

Learning Outcomes

Subject Mastery

  • Develop in-depth understanding of domestic equality legislation and critically evaluate existing and proposed new legislation in this area
  • Analyse the UK’s international obligations in this area
  • Develop understanding of the particular challenges of the DDA for businesses both as employers and service providers
  • Demonstrate knowledge and analytical ability in coursework and examination
  • Formulate effective policies to promote equality at work and consider how such policies would be implemented in practice
  • Research and analyse the interaction between domestic legislation and the UK’s international obligations as a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights and as a member of the European Union
  • Research existing and developing case law and legislation through case reports, government publications and journals.
  • Critically evaluate scholarly writing in the area.
