Our academic year is divided into two semesters. The University operates a modular system, and you are expected to study four modules each term, giving a total of eight modules in a full year. Modules may be mandatory, optional or elective:
Mandatory modules: These modules are compulsory.
Optional modules: Students are required to choose from a specified list of modules relevant to the subject area of their degree discipline.
Elective modules (download a PDF containing the list of approved electives): Students are permitted to choose modules from outside of their degree discipline. The School of Management and Languages has compiled a list of approved electives, which lists those modules that are popular elective choices for SML students. However, you may also take any module listed in the catalogue as an elective provided you meet the pre-requisite requirements.
Details of the mandatory modules, optional and elective choices for each degree can be found in your course structure document. The choice of optional and elective modules made in earlier years is crucial in determining the subjects you can study in later years.
The School of Management and Languages runs as many modules as resources permit in any given academic year. No guarantee can be given that all the modules listed in this catalogue will be running, this is dependent on staffing requirements and on student demand. Entry to specialist third and fourth year classes is also restricted.
You must be registered for the modules that you are studying. ALL students are now expected to register online. You can access the online enrolment facility at https://my.hw.ac.uk/hwreg0910/faces/Page1.jsp
If you receive a pass/proceed decision that allows you to progress at the July Exam Board you can enrol online from 3rd August 2009.
If you have resits, pass them successfully and receive a pass/proceed decision at the August Exam Board you may enrol online from 1st September 2009.
If you do not receive a pass/proceed decision after the August resit diet, you should contact the School Undergraduate Office for further information.
Any subsequent changes to optional or elective choices must be agreed between yourself and your mentor, then recorded on a Change of Module form available from the School Coursework Office, Mary Burton Building, Room 1.23. Modules may not be changed after Week 3 of the relevant semester. The form must be returned to the School UG Office for processing. Failure to notify us of a change in module may lead to a delay of notification of your exam results to you.
